I am a member of the 2022 employee turnover stats.
For me, leaving my prior employer was about pursuing a personal passion – it was not about leaving a job or employer I dreaded.
Before you resign, here’s one thought to consider:
In Marcus Buckingham‘s book Love + Work, Marcus talks about keeping a list of tasks you love and tasks that you loathe in your workday.
After a week, review your list – what were the loves – the things that gave you energy and what were your loathes, the things that zapped your energy.
Focus on understanding your “red threads” – those things that you love and give you energy.
We can’t eliminate all loathes from our jobs (our lives), but we can work on increasing the time we spend on our loves.
Choose to have a courageous conversation with your leader – “I’m at my best when… is there an opportunity to do more of X?” (Quote from Marcus).
Before you become part of the #greatresignation stat, take a pause and reflect.
For employers (leaders) worried about #turnover, consider this:
Pursue authentic curiosity with your employees.
Seek to understand employee loves – what work turns them on – what are their loves.
To the degree that you are able, organize their work to increase tasks that give them energy.
This is as simple as giving someone who loves leading projects a small project of their own, or someone who takes pride in their spreadsheet ability a chance to review someone else’s work.
