Don’t leave hands and heart behind

In times of transformation, organizations neglect their people and their purpose.

So is it surprising that transformations fail to deliver the desired outcome, burn out their people or crash in burn? Not really.

Ecosystems are healthy when each element within the ecosystem is healthy.

Likewise, ecosystems are unhealthy if one element within the ecosystem is unhealthy – that’s how ecosystems work.

Organizations could be thought of as ecosystems with three distinct elements: head, hands and heart (or, if you prefer: strategy, people and purpose).

If any of these three elements is weak, the entire organization is weak.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) survey found that organizations neglect hands and heart during transformations.

People, therefore, feel unsupported, uninspired and unempowered, resulting in disengagement and poor execution.

Leadership, and particularly the #CEO, must balance the head, hands and heart to maintain a vibrant and thriving organization.

Three questions to begin assessing the health of your organizational ecosystem:

1. Have we clearly articulated our organizational purpose?
2. Have we defined our talent brand (ie, how do we approach employee engagement, attraction and retention)?
3. Have we articulated our near, mid and long-term strategies?
